Two days before Christmas in 2008 a tragedy struck the Eastern Cape fishing community when a chokka boat capsized with 19 men on board.
The Kingfisher went down near Oyster Bay off Cape St Francis in what was described as monstrous weather conditions and although lives were lost some incredible rescues were made. The tragedy inspired resident Mark Mans to establish a station for the NSRI in Oyster Bay, as the area was in closer proximity to potential events and would therefore result in a quicker response time for emergencies. Mans, with a small team, but a lot of passion, donated a jet ski for the station and also provided space in a garage building next to one of his properties. It was the size of a double garage, providing space for the jet-ski and equipment and serving as a tiny office. It quickly became too small for training purposes and training evenings were held at crew members' houses. Established two years after the Kingfisher tragedy, Station 36 was born and served as a satellite station for St Francis Bay. Raising funds Station 36 was born out of passion and the need to establish a proper base was becoming a necessity. In 2018, a new station commander Lodewyk van Rensburg took over the reigns and brought with him a renewed energy and passion for saving lives. Van Rensburg's wife Melissa established a station fundraising committee and so the "Mandjie Dans" was born. It evolved from a Boere dans and Spitbraai to the "Mandjie Dans" after Covid 19. Station 36 is now inviting people from near and far to help raise funds and awareness for Sea Rescue while enjoying what Oyster Bay has to offer. With the festive season upon us, the NSRI will be out in full force assisting bathers and fishermen around the coastline. Funds raised this year will go towards a medical room due to Oyster Bay being in a remote location. The room will assist Station 36 in stabilizing patients in a trauma room while they wait for an ambulance. Spokesperson for the NSRI Craig Lambinon says the Mandjie Dans is one of his favourite events and he is committed to getting his dance shoes ready and letting his hair down for a good cause.NSRI Oyster Bay Mandjie Dans 2023 with JAN JAN JAN - Brought to you By My SPAR Date: 4 November 2023
