The National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) in Jeffreys Bay is appealing to the public for assistance after they have lost eight of their life-saving pink Buoys in just a few days.
The NSRI Pink Rescue Buoys initiative was honoured at the International Maritime Rescue Federation conference in Norway in 2018 for Innovation and Technology and has already assisted in saving the lives of over 80 South Africans.
The NSRI took to their social media platforms on Thursday, pleading for the thieves to return it immediately.
They also posted a photograph of the alleged culprits with their faces blurred out.
In 2018, four teenagers were captured on a CCTV camera in J'Bay, stealing a buoy from its post at Point Beach, Wavecrest.
The device was returned after a video released by the NSRI went viral on social media.
Immense research went into their deployment around the South African coastline and the pink colour, which shows up as the brightest in surf conditions, is unique to the NSRI.
The NSRI is appealing to the public to promote the success of these life-saving floatation devices, and not to steal them as it could cost a life.
If someone is spotted with these devices please report it to the Jeffreys Bay emergency number 079 916 0390
