The National Prosecuting Authority has welcomed Friday's life sentence imposed on a Uitenhage man for the murder of a pregnant Somali woman.
Twenty-one-year-old Ashley Whitebooi was also sentenced to an additional 15 years on charges of housebreaking and robbery.
He was convicted of the murder of 22-year-old Nasri Qamaan, who was nine months pregnant, in her home in September last year.
NPA spokesperson, Tsepo Ndwalaza, says "we are pleased that this will send a very strong message to the communities out there that the NPA is working hard to ensure we deal with criminals in an effective manner in our courts of law."
Meanwhile, Somalian community leader, Sheik Shakir Adam, says they feel they are soft targets, referring also to this week's killing of a Somali national in Booysens Park, during three days of rioting.
