NPA expresses shock at court protest in PE

The National Prosecuting Authority in Port Elizabeth has expressed its shock following an unusual protest outside the magistrates court today.

A 35 year old radio presenter from Kingfisher FM made a brief appearance in court this morning on a charge of sexual assault.

He is currently out on bail of R2 000.

Protesters gathered outside court with specially made banners and placards identifying the alleged victim and calling her a liar.

The law states that no victim of sexual assault may be identified.

The 22 year old woman laid a charge against the DJ earlier this year for allegedly making several threatening and sexually explicit phone calls to her.

The young woman's irate father told Algoa FM news that he was appalled at the scenes outside Court this morning.

He confirmed that he would be laying charges of criminal defamation this afternoon with the investigating officer in the case over the contents of the placards and banners, which brand his daughter a liar and identify her.

Public Prosecutor Linda Le Roux said that in her 17 years working with sexual offences cases, she had never encountered such open hostility towards an alleged victim of this type of crime.
