Now we ride! kids get bikes from VW and Qhubeka

Volkswagen South Africa partnered with Qhubeka for the fourth instalment of the Bicycle Education Empowerment Programme (BEEP) handover this week, this time in Orlando in the heart of Soweto.

The more than 200 bicycles or ‘Blue Bikes’, as they are known, were delivered to Bona Comprehensive High School, Selelekela Secondary School and the Orlando Community Policing Forum, which keeps the recipients and their communities moving forward.

Volkswagen South Africa Managing Director Thomas Schaefer said the sole purpose is to help people progress further on their life journey

In the last four years, the Uitenhage-based vehicle manufacturer and Qhubeka have mobilised thousands of schoolchildren -  alleviating the pressure of commuting in remote rural areas.

Of South Africa’s 17-million schoolchildren, 11 million walk to get to school, which can take up to four hours, leaving them tired and making it difficult to concentrate in class.
