The names have been released of the three inmates who were killed in the St. Albans prison outside Port Elizabeth on Monday.
Chaos erupted in the facility when warders were attacked with sharp objects.
Thirteen warders were injured, six of them critically.
Police say the inmates who died, were 42-year-old Bonisile Khayingo, 24-year-old Mziyanda Mata and 22-year-old Luzuko Ncokazi.
Khayingo was the notorious so-called Schoenmakerskop red T-shirt attacker who terrorised visitors in December 2009.
He was found guilty of and sentenced for robbery with aggravating circumstances in November 2011.
Meanwhile the issue of overcrowding and gangsterism have been identified as some of the factors that contributed to the violence that broke out on Monday.
Eastern Cape Correctional Services Regional Commissioner Nkosinathi Breakfast says a lock down of the Maximum B section of the prison and the axing of family visits to St Albans - are just some of the measures that have been put in place in dealing with the matter
