Eastern Cape police are still maintaining a strong presence in Sterkspruit in the north eastern cape where residents have been protesting for several weeks.
Provincial police spokesperson, brigadier Marinda Mills, says 70 people appeared in court earlier this month on charges of public violence.
They were released on warning.
Residents, under the banner of the Sterkspruit Civic Association, are demanding to have their own municipality, saying they no longer want to be part of the Senqu Municipality which incorporates Lady Grey.
Mills says the unrest has crippled the town and infringed on the rights of people who are not protesting.
