NMU students granted bail of R100

Four students who were arrested for their alleged involvement in a protest at the Nelson Mandela University this week have appeared in the Port Elizabeth Magistrate's court.

Seven students were initially arrested but three were released by Humewood police on Tuesday evening.

NMU spokesperson Zandile Mbabela says they were arrested for being in direct violation of a standing interdict, which was read out and enforced on Monday.

The students have been granted bail of R100 each and may not partake in any further protest action.

The court was packed with fellow students, mostly from the EFF who came out in support.

The University has deployed security reinforcements and will continue patrolling with the aim of securing the campuses and lecture venues for staff and students.

Siyamcela Mantshontsho, Siyamdumisa Vena, Ngcaliyethu Dingani and Zukisa Sigoxo must be back in court on the 23rd of April.
