The Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University will relaunch itself as Nelson Mandela University on the 20th of July - two days after what would have been the former president's 99th birthday.
The university says in a statement the launch of Nelson Mandela University is an important milestone in the journey it set when it adopted the institution's Vision 2020.
This vision aims to establish a "new generation, dynamic African university, recognised for its leadership in producing cutting-edge knowledge for a sustainable future."
The institution’s new name, Nelson Mandela University, was gazetted by Higher Education and Training minister Dr Blade Nzimande last year.
The university says it chose not to immediately formally use the new name, as it believed adequate preparations were necessary to do so.
