Port Elizabeth police have arrested an NMMU student after a group set barricades alight to the university entrance early on Monday morning.
Police spokesperson, Colonel Priscilla Naidu, says the 22-year-old was detained in terms of an Act that came into effect effect last June as it relates to the damage of essential infrastructure.
She told Algoa FM News that in terms of the Act the student will not be able to get bail without bringing a formal bail application.
"Police arrested the student at about 5.20am. He is being detained under the Criminal matters Amendment Act, which entails the damage to essential infrastructure. It is alleged that students set the barricade at the entrance of North Campus. No further gatherings are taking place and police are monitoring the situation".
Naidu says the student is being detained at the Humewood police station.
