Nelson Mandela Bay and Buffalo City Metro Municipalities have been named as first and second runners-up in the Greenest Municipality competition run by the Department of Environmental Affairs.
The City of Johannesburg was named the overall winner yesterday by the Deputy Minister of Environmental Affairs, Barbara Thompson.
Nelson Mandela Bay received a R3 million cash prize while Buffalo City scooped R2.5 million.
The Greenest Municipality Competition was introduced in 2001 under a different title.
It aims to raise awareness on issues around environmental protection, social upliftment and economic growth.
