The Adcock Old Age Home, based in Korsten, has received a much needed R1.5m "facelift" .
The newly revamped building was revealed by the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality on Tuesday.
Executive Mayor, Athol Trollip, said part of the renovations included the replacement of ceilings, doors and the installment of burglar guards.
He said the municipality still has plans to further renovate the building but it has to budget for phase two.
Trollip said they have also visited other municipality owned old age homes around the city and the Human Settlements Directorate has also prioritised all homes that need to be revamped.
"It's work on going all the time and then this year's budget is now available so we will utilise this year's budget. If we haven't finished all the old age homes with this year's budget then they will be put on to the next year's budget. I think this work is ongoing because when these people leave these houses other people will be coming in. It's the cycle of life the elderly depart and the young people like me become elderly" he said.
67-year-old Agnes Williams, who has lived in the old age home for eight years, expressed her excitement about the upgrades.
"We are so comfortable, we can go out in the night and come back. We can also go to church and come back there isn't that fear in us" Williams said.
