Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality has electrified 214 homes in Motherwell's Ward 55 following the death of two people in the area due to illegal electricity connections.

Phase 1 of the electrification project in Khayelitsha informal houses was launched on Wednesday.

NMB head of Electricity and Energy, Lance Grootboom, said last year two people died due to illegal connections in the area.

He said as there were more than 800 informal houses in the community and the Metro will connect more homes to the grid.

“We already have infrastructure up to cater for the remaining 600 shacks. What is outstanding are the meter boxes for inside the houses.”

Grootboom said they “will come back soon and connect the remaining homes as we know electricity is a basic need.”

He said they wanted to complete the entire project by the end of the financial year to ensure that people have a safe and stable electricity supply in winter.
