Nelson Mandela Bay Tourism says it's deeply concerned by a proposal to establish a fish farm in Algoa Bay.
The Department of Environmental Affairs has given environmental authorisation for the project to go ahead.
Speaking on the DMB on Algoa FM on Wednesday morning, Nelson Mandela Bay Tourism CEO, Mandlakazi Skefile, says while they understand the value of such an investment, they are concerned about the negative impact a fish farm off-shore will have, specifically on the Metro's tourism sector.
"It's negative impact that you are talking about is to do with the water safety issues and quality of water. We know of our flagship event that is Ironman that takes place annually. If such a project should go ahead on our shores we would lose such an event. Ironman is one of those events that have a major spin-off for the city"
Skefile has also urged people to sign an online petition to stop the project from going ahead.
"We want to encourage and request all our residents and friends of Nelson Mandela Bay to please log onto the petition online" she added.
(The petition is on the Algoafm website on the main page)
