NMB to pilot grid solar home systems for informal settlements

Nelson Mandela Bay will be one of the first municipalities in the country to install a 12-volt Solar Home System as a pilot project within urban informal settlements.

According to the Electricity and Energy Directorate, the informal settlements referred to are those on unproclaimed sites.

The report says the aim is to meet government’s mandate of reaching universal access using grid and non-grid technologies.

It says that in terms of the Integrated National Electrification Programme, Nelson Mandela Bay has been allocated R22 million for non-grid solar home systems in informal dwellings as a pilot project.

The first phase of the project is expected to consist of approximately 3000 installations.
