The Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality says it decommissioned the barges that extract water from the Impofu Dam on Saturday due to the low water level.
Executive Mayor, Retief Odendaal says as a result, the Impofu has been shut down for the immediate future.
He says the Metro's water system remains under severe pressure due to a deficit in supply and high demand from residents and consumers.
Odendaal says the Chelsea and Emerald Hill reservoirs are taking severe strain and water interruptions can be expected during the course of Sunday in these zones.
He has urged consumers to use municipal water only for drinking, cooking, and personal hygiene purposes and not to stockpile water or operate washing machines, as this type of demand will deplete these two reservoirs completely.
Odendaal says they are working around the clock to stabilize the system and further updates will follow in due course.
