The Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality says the planned shutdown for the canal repairs in the lower Sundays River has led to strained water supply systems in the metro.
The Metro's Senior Director of Water and Sanitation, Barry Martin said on Saturday evening that many of the reservoirs were below 50% and they had deployed water trucks in various areas of the Metro.
"Many of our reservoirs are below 50% and water is strained. Chelsey reservoir is at 11% and some of the areas have been experiencing complete water outages', he said.
In an earlier statement, the Mayoral Committee member for Infrastructure and Engineering, Khanya Ngqisha assured residents that the work currently underway to tie-in the Sundays River Canal is progressing well.
He said it was envisaged that work on the critical tie would be completed on Tuesday.
"From Tuesday, the system is expected to gradually recover over about a week', Ngqisha said.
