Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality said 17 Covid19-related deaths were reported in the Metro in a 24-hour period.
Acting mayor, Councillor Tshonono Buyeye said the latest report tabled by the Department of Health on Tuesday during the City’s COVID-19 Disaster Management Forum meeting, does not paint a good picture for the City.
“We have learnt that in the past 24 hours in our hospitals, we recorded 17 deaths and 14 of those occurred in the private sector and 3 in the public sector. Life Mercantile Hospital recorded a total of 10 deaths yesterday and St Georges had 4 and Dora Nginza recorded three deaths for yesterday alone,” he said.
Buyeye said this took the overall number of deaths reported in the Metro as of 30 November to 1 788.
The Municipality expressed its condolences to the families and friends of those who lost their loved ones. “They are in our thoughts and as a country, we are in mourning with them,” he said.
Meanwhile, the acting mayor encouraged residents to seek out government quarantine sites if their home situation was not conducive to quarantine or self-isolate.
“The numbers of patients in the Intensive Care Units (ICU) are increasing every day. We are told 109 patients are currently in ICU’s with 95 in private hospitals and 14 patients in public facilities. A total of 43 patients were on ventilators with 42 of them in private hospitals,” Buyeye said.
In a statement, he appealed to residents to “take the virus seriously” adding that “some of these deaths could have been avoided if everyone complied with the regulations.”
