Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality has condemned an attack on an international athlete training for the 2017 Standard Bank Iroman African Championship in the Metro next weekend.
The head of Safety and Security, John Best, said that “the city administration” and the SAPS have condemned the incident late Friday in the area of Victoria Drive near Schoenmakerskop.
Best said the four youths had pushed the athlete from Europe off his bicycle and hit him over the head with a knobkierie before stealing his cellphone.
He said the man lost consciousness and witnesses called an ambulance. Best, who spoke to Algoa FM News from the Humewood Police Station early Friday evening, said the athlete was not seriously injured and was giving police a statement.
Best said Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality had been planning all along to implement a security strategy from Monday using recently recruited Nelson Mandela Bay Metro police along the athletes training routes.
He said police were combing the area around where the incident took place for the attackers.
