The Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality is warning residents that the potential for day zero still looms large in the Metro.
That's despite some excellent rainfall in the main catchment area in the Langkloof in August which has seen the city's main supply dams recover to 16.34%
of total combined capacity.
Water and Sanitation Director Barry Martin says the Bay’s water situation remains constrained.
He's also reminded residents that the city is still under significant water restrictions implemented by the National Department of Water and Sanitation.
These restrictions limit how much water the Municipality can draw from the system and will only likely be revisited if and when the dams recover to above 50% capacity.
“The implication of these restrictions is that we all need to continue to reduce water consumption by adhering to 50 litres per person per day," says Martin.
"Currently, our seven-day average is 274 Megaliters per day which is 44 Megalitres per day over the target. We are also facing an increasing level of vandalism
which affects electrical supply to reservoirs, negatively impacting our ability to produce consistent supply for all.” added Martin.
JOC spokesperson Luvuyo Bangazi concluded that the current interventions by key role players, including the effort by national, have clearly pushed back day zero.
