Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality says the Metro has officially exited the fourth wave of Covid19 infections.
The Head of Public Health, Thsonono Buyeye, made the announcement after reports were submitted to the Joint Operating Centre on Tuesday.
He said the reports indicated that Covid19 infections and deaths had dropped drastically.
"We are happy to be out of the fourth wave officially. We do encourage more residents to get their COVID-19 vaccines, as we have seen that the vaccination rate is still low. We are encouraged to learn that as of Monday, 79 patients recovered from the virus, while only one death was recorded," he said.
However, Buyeye said although COVID-19 still remains, daily infections dropped by 21%, compared to last week’s statistics.
"A total of 294 active cases were recorded on Monday, with 27 patients hospitalised and five of those patients in Intensive Care Units (ICUs)," he said.
Buyeye urged residents to remain vigilant as the State of Disaster has been extended by a further month, "indicating that the fight was not over yet."
The National State of Disaster has been extended by another month to the 15th of March.
The National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD) published in its latest report that the death toll stands at 97 250.
