The non-payment of Spectrum Alert staff, the managing company of the Integrated Public Transport System of the Cleary Park - Central Business District Route in Gqeberha, was resolved by Nelson Mandela Bay Executive Mayor, Gary van Niekerk and his management team on Friday.
Van Niekerk says bus drivers, cleaners, ticket office, and auxiliary personnel, closed off City Hall and the intersection of Baakens Street and John Kani Road earlier on Friday due to the non-payment of salaries for the last two months.
The Metro says in a statement the dispute follows a decision three months ago to change the flow of capital of the Libhongulethu bus service, but administrative difficulties resulted in outstanding payments.
Mayor Van Niekerk apologised for the administrative bungle and assured the workers they would get paid by Monday.
City Manager, Noxolo Nqwazi, and Chief Operating Officer, Christopher Dyani assisted Van Niekerk to speed up the process and to ensure that it does not happen again.
