NMB launches war on waste project with private sector help

The Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality has partnered with local salt company, Marina Sea Salt, to launch a war on waste schools project.

Deputy Mayor and head of the metro's health directorate, Mongameli Bobani, officially launched the "Shine your light" recycling project at the Kleinskool Primary School on Monday.

The pilot project involves a total of nine schools around the metro, where learners will collect Sea Salt bottles for recycling, and stand in line to win various prizes.

Bobani said Kleinskool was one of the areas the municipality had identified as an illegal dumping hot spot.

He said a total of 350 people had been employed as part of the metro's R15m cleanup campaign, known as the War on Waste.

Marina Sea Salt Marketing Director, Bennie Bekker, said the aim of the project was to change people's mindsets when it came to littering.

“The training and education starts with the young ones, that’s where it starts," he said.
