NMB dam levels edging closer to 20%

This photo was taken in November 2019 when the Churchill dam was overflowing.

The average combined capacity of Nelson Mandela Bay’s main supply dams continues to edge closer to 20%, and according to figures released by the municipality on Monday,  are currently at just 20.2% of capacity.

The largest supply dam, the Kouga, is at just 10.9% of capacity, the Churchill at 65.83 and the Impofu at 16.45.

The Groendal Dam which serves the Uitenhage area is at 35.4%

Garth Sampson at the PE Branch of the SA weather service reports that roughly ten millimetres fell in the catchment areas in the Langkloof on Sunday night.

He says this will only serve to delay, by about a week, the steady weekly-decline of about one per cent in the dam levels.

Sampson reports that Nelson Mandela Bay experienced extremely low rainfall for April at just 18.4 mm.

He says what is extremely concerning is that everyone seems to be caught up in COVID-19 which has taken the focus away from saving water.
