Four suspects appeared in the Ngcobo Magistrate's Court in the Eastern Cape on Monday in connection with last week's deadly attack on the local police station.
Five policemen and a retired soldier were killed in that attack.
The suspects were among a group of 13 people who were arrested on Friday following a shootout between the suspects and members of a police task team at the Mancoba Seven Angels Ministries Church in Nyanga Village near the town.
During the shoot-out, seven suspects were killed and a policeman was injured.
National Prosecuting Authority spokesperson, Luxolo Tyali, said that "four men between the age of 19 and 30 appeared in the Ngcobo Magistrate's court."
He said they were charged with five counts of murder, two counts of robbery with aggravating circumstances and one count of attempted murder.
Tyali said the matter was remanded to the 8th of March for a bail application. "Two of the men abandoned bail and only two will be applying for bail when they appear on that date," he said.
Tyali said the situation regarding the other suspects who were arrested remains a police matter. "The police did indicate that they arrested such a number (13) of people but when they brought the docket to us the evidence that was in the docket only linked the four among those arrested by police. So, we only charged formally in court, the four that were linked by the evidence that was in the docket," he said.
