A newborn baby girl was found inside a street drain by a community member in Lorraine, Port Elizabeth, on Monday.
Police spokesperson, Colonel Priscilla Naidu, said a woman was walking her dog at 07h30 when she heard a baby crying from inside the drain.
Naidu said the woman stopped a passing vehicle and asked the driver to assist her in opening the drain.
She said once the drain was opened they found the naked baby inside.
"The child was taken to Dora Nginza Hospital and police are investigating a case child abandonment," Naidu said.
She said anyone with information, which can assist in tracing the newborn's mother, should contact the Walmer Police Station.
