A newborn baby boy was left at the entrance of the Mount Road Police Station in Gqeberha in the early hours of Tuesday morning.
Police spokesperson Colonel Priscilla Naidu says at about 2 am, an official walking to her vehicle, heard the sounds of a crying baby coming from the entrance at the pedestrian gate.
She says the boy was wrapped in a black and brown towel and a white blanket.
The infant was taken to Dora Nginza Hospital.
Colonel Naidu says a case of child abandonment is under investigation.
She says any member of the public who knows of anyone who may have been recently pregnant and no longer has a child is urged to contact police.
