New shopping mall and hotel proposed for Boardwalk in PE

Plans for an upmarket shopping mall at the Boardwalk in Port Elizabeth will be unveiled next week.

Emfuleni Resorts, trading as the Boardwalk, will reveal their plans for a joint venture with Parktown Capital that will see the construction of a new retail mall, office park and hotel on the ancilliary property.

However, they will need approval from the Eastern Cape Gambling and Betting Board, which will convene public hearings at the Boardwalk Hotel next Thursday.

Sun International's Michael Farr said members of the public were invited to offer support or object to the proposal.

"I can confirm that there will be a public hearing on 3 March regarding application from Emfuleni Resorts trading as the Boardwalk for the amendment of our casino license conditions. In terms of the application the intention behind that is to establish a new shopping mall, office apartments, a revitalised entertainment area and a hotel," he said.

Farr said in terms of the amendment application Emfuleni Resorts will also be seeking to extend their license by a further period of 20 years.

According to a notice published by the EC Gambling and Betting Board the public hearing is being convened in terms of section 28(1) of the Gambling and Betting Act of 1997.

"The application is for the approval of the development, the extension of the licence period by a further period of 20 years, exclusivity for the extended licence period, the subdivision of the Boardwalk’s property, the establishment of a sectional title scheme and the reduction of the size of the licensed premises," the Board notice said.
