New Parole hearing for convicted rapist Bob Hewitt set down for Tuesday

A new parole hearing for convicted rapist Bob Hewitt is expected to take place on Tuesday.

The 80-year-old disgraced tennis player was sentenced to an effective 6 years in prison for raping two of his underage students in the 80's.

Hewitt was initially granted parole but it was revoked after it came to light that the correct procedures were not followed in the matter as victims needed to be consulted in a parole hearing.

According to the lobby group Woman and Men Against Child Abuse, only one of Hewitt's victims will be present at the hearings in St Albans in spite of Covid19 regulations restricting visits to correctional facilities.

Only one victim drove all the way from Pretoria for the hearing, as one is overseas and another declined to attend.

Meanwhile, the Department of Correctional Services declined to reveal details like the date and venue of Hewitt's hearing.

However, Department spokesperson, Singabhako Nxumalo, said that the hearing will take place as directed by an earlier court order which gave them 40 days to finalise the matter.

He said the department has to abide by that ruling.
