Port Elizabeth police have arrested a 24 year-old suspect on a charge of attempted murder after he was involved in a shoot out with New Brighton police on Monday morning.
Constable Mncedi Mbombo says SAPS members noticed a Polo vivo whose occupants were acting suspiciously in Dubu street at around 6:30 am.
They gave chase and in red location the polo came to a halt. The men inside the vehicle started shooting at police who returned fire.
Constable Mbombo says one suspect was apprehended by police but that his accomplices managed to flee the scene.
The man will appear in court soon on a charge of attempted murder and the possession of a stolen vehicle.
Meanwhile, Constable Mbombo says police are maintaing a strong presence in Furgeson Road, New Brighton, following a service delivery protest.
A group of around 50 residents began burning tyres early this morning in protest at a lack of housing in the area.
Mbombo said a local councillor had arrived at the scene and was addressing the concerns of the group.
