Nelson Mandela University student leader arrested following protest

The regional chairperson of the South African Students' was arrested at Nelson Mandela University following a protest in Gqeberha on Thursday.

Police spokesperson Andre Beetge says the 27-year-old faces a charge of public violence and will appear in court soon.

“The NMU utilised its own security company to contain the situation. At about 09:30 SAPS Public Order Police (POP) was asked to assist. On arrival, the security manager handed over a protester who they detained for public violence,” says Beetge.

The student movement initially called for a shutdown today, concerning the fact that it says students are still unable to register for the academic year that is underway.

SASCO took to Facebook to demand the release of the young man and said he had been demonstrating peacefully and in no contravention of a court order in any way.
