GOOD calls for findings of George Building Collapse investigation to be tabled in council
The GOOD Party in George has called for the findings of the May 2024 Building Collapse investigation to be tabled in council.
During a council meeting on Thursday, the Disaster Management Plan for the 2025/2026 financial year was approved by a majority vote.
It is a Legislative requirement that the Plan be reviewed annually and approved by the Council.
GOOD argued that they could not approve the new plan without addressing the biggest "man-made" tragedy that had impacted the municipality.
A month ago, the Western Cape Premier Alan Winde handed over the independent structural engineering findings to the Western Cape Police Commissioner Thembisile Patekile and the lead investigator Johan de Lange.
According to GOOD, they have not seen any outcomes or actions based on the findings.
The party has now called on the Mayor to get the report from the Premier and to table it in council.
"By reviewing the findings we can prevent further incidents of this nature from occurring in the future.
"The findings will also give much-needed closure to the families of the victims.
"It has been almost 10 months since the tragedy took 34 lives and seriously injured many others.
"The collapse and the days that followed will forever be in our memory. We need a Disaster Management Plan that has a well-defined and cohesive municipal response to incidents affecting our area," the party said in a statement.
