Nelson Mandela Bay supply dams are said to be at an all-time low at 26.94%, the lowest level since 2010 when the combined dam levels slipped to 31%.
In a statement on Wednesday, Mayoral Committee Member for Infrastructure and Engineering Councillor Masixole Zinto, said that although the City was making every effort to reduce consumption and cut water losses, the lack of rain has not helped.
Zinto said last year Executive Mayor, Athol Trollip, declared the City a disaster area, introduced stricter measures and also pumped millions of rands into improving water distribution infrastructure while also addressing water leaks.
He said some City swimming pools were also closed while Trollip officially opened a borehole in Motherwell Cemetery where people, more especially water-related businesses, are allowed to extract water for free.
“Soon the City will assist in delivering borehole water to their business, taking off the load on the much-needed drinking water that they were extracting from municipal taps. More resources will be put in in monitoring those who fail to adhere to water restrictions,” Zinto said.
He said an urgent meeting of the Directorate of Infrastructure and Engineering will be called before the end of next week to discuss and decide on more restrictions.
