Nelson Mandela Bay's overdue consumer debt increased by R220.3m between June and December of last year, to reach R1.47b.
The Mid-Year Financial Report presented to Council on Thursday showed that arrears owed by households increased from R926.8m to R1.16b during that time.
The report by acting chief financial officer Selwyn Thys also showed that the total outstanding debt for businesses dropped from R284.4m to R267.8m.
He said national and provincial government departments owe the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality nearly R47m in arrears.
