Nelson Mandela Bay running out of water

Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality will soon introduce a massive water leaks repair programme in a bid to cut down on water wastage.

That was the word from Acting Executive Mayor, Tshonono Buyeye, who sounded a dire warning on Friday that the Metro was "running out of water".

He said dam levels dropped below 29% of combined capacity this week, while daily consumption of 300 megalitres a day was far above the 250 megalitres a day target.

Buyeye said they will use the services of seven plumbing contractors to augment the current staff complement to fix water leaks.

"This campaign will focus on high users, like manufacturing industries, schools and hospitality industry, with more focus also given to municipal employees and facilities," he said.

The Municipality will also turn-off all the taps in Municipal ablution facilities, while employees will just use hand sanitiser.

Buyeye said they also have a dedicated team to deal with water leaks in municipal buildings.
