Nelson Mandela Bay Pride PE unveil biggest Rainbow Flag in Africa

Nelson Mandela Bay Pride Port Elizabeth and The Boardwalk unveiled the biggest Rainbow Flag in Africa at the Donkin Reserve.

The unveiling on Friday forms part of the 4th annual Nelson Mandela Bay Pride Festival taking place at The Boardwalk on Saturday.

The giant Rainbow Flag measures at a whopping 12 by 8 meters and is the biggest of its kind to hang on a flagpole.

Its bright colours have become recognised as the symbol for lesbian, gay, bi-sexual, transgender and pride.

Event organisor, Thomas Bekker, says the music festival will kick off at 11am on Saturday and will include a drag act by the famous Mary Scary and other local performers.

"Its important to raise awareness, that's why pride is here. It's to raise awareness for the community, to know that we are here and we have rights." says Bekker.

There will be a parade from the Boardwalk from 4pm. Tickets for the festival can be bought at the gates for R30.
