The Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality spent R205.9 million on consultants between 2007 and last year.
That's according to a report to be submitted to the Municipal Public Accounts Committee.
The figures, which are part of a report on the implementation of the Operational Efficiency Work Plan, show that in 2010/11 alone some R48.1 million was spent, which was R9.7 million more than the amount in the Adjustments Budget.
In 2009/10 a total of R41.5 million was spent on consultants, which was R7.6 million more than the amount in the Budget.
The report notes that there have been huge increases in expenditure and in terms of the allocated budget.
It points out, however, that a significant portion of the total has been used for the Integrated Public Transport System.
