The Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality Electricity Training building has officially switched to solar power to decrease pressure on the power grid.
The metro's Acting Senior Director for Technical Services for Electricity and Energy, Bernard Lamore says the move to solar power comes at a time where the country is facing an electricity crises.
The municipality together with its partner, GIZ, switched on its new solar panel grids at the centre on Friday.
Lamore said this was not a new initiative for the Metro as about 2000 solar grid panels have already been installed in informal settlements.
He said more solar panels will be installed in future to conserve electricity and curb illegal electricity connections.
A further 2000 grid panels, sponsored by GIZ, will be installed in informal settlements to ensure that the poor have access to electricity.
Meanwhile, the municipality is urging residents to switch off their electricity appliances for an hour between 20;30 and 21;30 on Saturday night as part of Earth Hour.
