Nelson Mandela Bay gears up for the Opening of the Season

Port Elizabeth police say maximum security will be deployed along the city's beachfront Friday for the annual Opening of the Season, to ensure that everyone attending enjoys a crime free and safe opening event.

Colonel Priscilla Naidu said people are warned to behave themselves, adding they would be arrested for contravening any laws or by-laws.

She said liquor is strictly prohibited on the city's beaches and those behaving unruly will be arrested and charged accordingly.

Metro spokesperson, Mthubanzi Mniki, also warned motorists not to drink and drive, as the municipality's law enforcement agencies will apply a zero tolerance to drunk driving.

“We encourage motorists to come to the seaside for the official opening at least before 3pm so that the movement of traffic can be smooth,” he said.

Meanwhile, festivities will be marked by a massive fireworks display and musical entertainment will also be provided.

The Municipality said some roads may also be closed.
