Charities in Nelson Mandela Bay are reportedly bearing the brunt of the economic downturn, with a slump in donations amid a rising need among beneficiaries.
The Children's Feeding Trust, which feeds more than a thousand children in the region daily, says the downturn in donations is being exacerbated by an increase in hungry and abandoned children.
The Trust's organising secretary, Maureen van Staden, says reports from beneficiaries are that more children are being abandoned this year as people flock to the cities seeking employment.
The trust's financial assistant, Pat Mangold, adds that there's a dire need for businesses to step in amid a slump in donations from the public because of rising everyday costs.
