Port Elizabeth police confiscated needles, knives and numerous other weapons from homeless people sheltering at the Walmer Town Hall.
At least 73 homeless people were being accommodated there in terms of government’s lockdown regulations while another 25 were being accommodated at the Jarman Hall in Schauderville.
The Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality Disaster Management Advisory Forum said other halls where homeless people were being directed to, were the Uitenhage Town Hall, Babs Madlakane Hall, and NU2 Community Hall.
In a statement on Saturday, it said “there had been a slight improvement in the level of civil disobedience" experienced on Day One of the national lockdown.
“Hotspot areas have been identified in the Northern Areas and both the South African Police Services and Metro Police have been concentrating on enforcement today. We are calling on the public to adhere to the restrictions.”
Five fines of R5 000 each were issued at a combined roadblock by the SAPS and Metro Police in Melkbos Avenue in Uitenhage.
“One of the vehicles exceeding the 60% capacity regulation was a municipal operational vehicle deployed as part of their essential service duties,” the Forum said.
