Namibian nationals arrested in East London for diamond scam

Police in East London have arrested four Namibian nationals who tried to extort an unsuspecting person in a suspected diamond scam in broad daylight.

Police Spokesperson Brigadier Tembinkosi Kinana says the suspects aged between 35 and 45 took advantage of a man who was trying to sell his car on Gumtree.

They called him under false pretences and asked him to give them R5 000 in exchange for one million dollars. They are further alleged to have shown him a substance wrapped in a brown paper bag, which they identified as diamonds.

Kinana says as soon as the man realised he was about to become a victim he pretended to ask for time to get more money and immediately contacted police.

The suspects were immediately traced and arrested.

During the arrest, police confiscated about 20 Zimbabwean dollars, R600.00 in cash a cellphone and the vehicle they were driving.

The suspects are expected to appear in court on Friday where they will face charges of Fraud, Extortion and for contravening the Precious Stones Act.
