The N2 at Plettenberg Bay remains closed between Shell Ultra City and Kwanokuthula, due to ongoing community protests, that started in Qolweni (Ward 3) on Tuesday night. Public order police and all other roleplayers remain on the scene to manage the ongoing protest.
Residents from Ward 4 (New Horizons) have also joined the protest which is why a decision was made, in the interest of safety. to keep the N2 closed.
Bitou Municipality says in a statement the situation remains volatile and tense, with sporadic stone throwing and fires on the road.
Public Order Police management are leading attempts to get an undertaking from the protest leaders to meet with political leaders to find a solution.
The municipality says the first objective is to open the N2
Traffic in both directions is still being diverted via the airport/Robberg road from the Knysna direction and through Plettenberg Bay town, from the Port Elizabeth direction.
A decision has also been made to close the municipal administrative offices, in the interest of safety; due to the escalation of the protest. Two councillors and three officials have meanwhile also been escorted into safety, as a precautionary measure.
