Police in Port Elizabeth have opened up a case of murder and inquest after a murder-suicide in Newton Park on Sunday.
A Police spokesperson Captain Sandra Janse van Rensburg says the 74-year-old Johannes Maritz first shot his 47-year-old daughter Merisa Maritz, before turning the gun on himself.
She says the second daughter, who was visiting from Moorreesburg in the Western Cape, heard a commotion in the house just before 11 pm and went to her sibling's room to investigate.
Janse van Rensburg says she saw her father standing next to her sister's bed before a shot was fired.
She went to her bedroom to call for help when she heard a second shot.
Maritz went to the bathroom where he shot himself.
