The Gqeberha man accused of killing his ex-wife has been given a date for his admission for observation at the Fort England Hospital in Makhanda.

Johnny Baartman, 59, made a brief appearance in the Gqeberha Magistrates Court on Thursday.

The court referred Baartman for psychiatric evaluation after he allegedly murdered his ex-wife, Desiree, 58, at their home in Bethelsdorp in June.

The state alleges that he dumped Desiree's body down a 3.7-meter stormwater drain next to Standford Road near the Jagtersvlakte area.

State prosecutor Melani Hammett informed the court that a bed will be available for Baartman on 20 October.

Baartman will remain in custody since he has abandoned his bid for bail.

During a previous court appearance, it came to light that Baartman had allegedly told a district surgeon that he killed Desiree in the "spur of the moment" after being provoked.

He also admitted that he cleaned the crime scene.

The case was remanded to 15 September.
