Murder accused cop denied bail

Raul Damons

A Sergeant attached to the Kamesh police station, who has been charged with murder, will spend Christmas behind bars.

A dejected Rudy Arends was escorted back to the holding cells at the Kariega Magistrate's Court on Monday when his bail application was denied.

In denying him bail, the court found that there was a likelihood that Arends could interfere with state witnesses and attempt to evade his trial.

The fact that Arends did not prove any exceptional circumstances that warrant his release on bail, the strength of the state's case, and the violent nature and gravity of the offense, were also stated as reasons for bail being denied.

Arends was the third suspect to be arrested by the Hawks in connection with the murder of 31-year-old Raul Damons at his house in Strelitzia Park in December last year.

His co-accused are alleged Spotbouers gang members Deilon Makoppa and Clinton Minnies.

The court said the "gang-related relations" of Arend's co-accused could not be ignored.

For safety reasons, Arends will be kept in a single cell at the North End Prison in Gqeberha.

The case was postponed to 25 January.
