An independent facilitator has proposed a 7% wage increase for municipal employers.
This, after the SA Municipal Workers Union and the Independent Municipal Trade and Allied Workers Union, deadlocked in wage negotiations.
Facilitator, Professor Attie van der Merwe, proposed a further one percent increase for the next two financial year as part of a multi-year proposal to break the impasse.
Papikie Mohale of the SA Municipal Workers Union says they were seeking an 11% increase and a single-year agreement.
"What we are going to do now, we are in the process of consulting our members to seek a fresh mandate based on the report. We have until the 24th of July to indicate whether members have accepted or rejected the proposal. If the proposal is not accepted by the 24th of July, we will then be issued with a certificate of non-recognition." says Mohale.
Algoa FM News also spoke to Anja Muller Diebicht of Imatu.
"At the moment we are canvassing with our members, we are wanting to get a mandate and we have to receive that from all our members. We are going on a canvassing process and we will make sure our membership knows the terms of the conciliation proposal, if they are happy with the contents they will accept, if not they will reject the proposal. That would mean either would go to a binding interest arbitration or possibly go on strike." says Muller Diebicht
