Municipal workers in George demand R64 million for Covid danger pay

The unprotected strike by George municipal workers continues for a second day on Monday.

Workers downed tools on Friday pushing for a long-standing demand for danger-pay for work done during the Covid19 lockdown.

George Municipality spokesperson, Chantel Edward-Klose, says the demand is unaffordable.

She says the Municipality will not tolerate illegal action, and as such will adopt a no work, no pay stance as well as implementing procedures for dismissal where applicable.

The strike action revolves around a request for “danger payment” in addition to employees' full monthly salaries already received, for work performed during the Covid-19 Lockdown.

Edward Klose says Organised labour has demanded a sum of R20 000 per person, for nine months, which totals a lump sum of R64 million.

She says this demand is unable to be met by George Municipality, given the losses and financial impact Covid-19 has had on the municipality itself.
