A municipal worker from Port Elizabeth has been arrested for being in possession of suspected stolen property.
Police Spokesperson Colonel Priscilla Naidu says members of the Bomb Disposal Unit, who were busy in Cresswell Road in Sidwell on Tuesday afternoon, noticed a municipal vehicle parking at a scrap dealership.
Members became suspicious when they saw a man carrying two bags into the premises.
Police followed him into the building where they saw one of the bags lying on the floor.
The 26-year-old Saveriano Stephens quickly disappeared from the scene, whilst the police were looking at the contents of the bag.
Naidu says the bag contained about 60 water meters with an estimated value of R35 000.
The suspect was traced to the municipal offices in Kabega Park where he was arrested.
Stephens made a brief appearance in the New Brighton Magistrates court on Wednesday and was granted bail of R300.
He will be back in court in June.
Naidu says more arrests are expected.
