Municipal strike at Amathole conditionally suspended

The Municipal worker's strike action at the Amathole District Municipality, which led to taps in various communities in this eastern cape district running dry, has been conditionally suspended.

The workers downed tools last month demanding an annual salary increase of 6.5 per cent and a notch progression of 2.5 per cent.

The SA Municipal Workers' Union in the region says it's agreed to suspend the strike as it meets with its members on Tuesday to discuss the proposal from the employer.

SAMWU's regional spokesperson Lona Lubhedu says the month-long strike will be called off if their members agree to the employer's terms in the meeting.

Meanwhile, angry community members in Butterworth continue barricading streets in a protest against the water shutdown in the area.

Police spokesperson, Captain Jackson Manatha says 16 people were arrested and charged for malicious damage to property and public violence during the protest on Monday.
